Breaking Up is Hard To Do

Letting Go

Some of you know me and that I was married and divorced way in the past century.  So far back that I call it my "previous life".  During decades of dating there have been more than a few break-ups.  While it’s always sad and difficult and disappointing, it’s absolutely true that clearing out the old makes way for something – or someone -  new and wonderful to come into our life.

It occurred to me during this most romantic month of the year that there are many comparisons between breaking up with a love and ending it with our beloved stuff.

Here are some questions to ask yourself to help make the tough decisions about whether to dump what no longer serves you.  Some friends on a road trip helped with this list, and we laughed a lot and got a little silly – so with tongue in cheek here's the list!

1.     Do I love it and do I use it?  If you can’t say yes to at least one it may be time to sever the cord.

2.    How hard will it be to replace if the worst happens and I really want it back?

3.    How long has it been since I really, truly enjoyed it?

4.  Just because it felt like a gift in the beginning do I have to give it a home forever?  Things change.

5.   Will a photo do as well and give me the memories of the happy part?

6.   Is it past its prime?  May be time for an upgrade!

7.   Do I already have and/or need more than one?

8.   How much can I get (cash, deduction, warm fuzzy) by putting it back into the Universe?

9.  Would someone else enjoy and use it more and better than I do?

10.   If I don’t need it often can I rent one when I do?

I promise a little editing will make you feel lighter and life will be simpler.  The best part is that with your stuff you always get to be the dump-er – never the dump-ee!!

    Happy Valentine’s Day
