"Someday"

Elizabeth Hagen is a NAPO board member and a speaker at their annual Conference I recently attended in Reno ( pre-earthquakes fortunately!). Elizabeth has years of experience as a Professional Organizer, and she's a terrific speaker who both educates and inspires.

I see the problem with "someday" too often in my work - clients who are stuck in thinking too much about and living for a vague future. This negatively impacts much more than the stuff cluttering space that is being kept for possible use "someday". The article below from Elizabeth is from her newsletter at www.elizabethhagen.com

My personal organizing motto is "Do not have anything in your home that you don't consider functional, beautiful, or both".

Have a terrific week - the weather here in central Arkansas is gorgeous today!

Do you fall into the 'someday' trap when trying to get organized?
by Elizabeth Hagen

I might need this someday.
I'll fit into this someday.
You just never know, this may come in handy someday.
Someday I'll get organized.

The 'someday trap' is a real self-esteem and productivity killer. If you allow yourself to let 'someday' be part of your thinking you're going to find it really hard to let go of items you don't need, clothes you'll never wear again, and paper that is not necessary.

How about a new way of thinking? How about having 'someday' be today? If you can't wear something right now, if you don't need something right now, and if you can't come up with a great reason to keep that item - and if that elusive word 'someday' pops up as you're going through the decision making process of what to keep - let the item go. Yes, let it go.

If you do I guarantee you're going to feel a lot better about yourself. Imagine, having only clothes that fit you in your closet. Imagine, your office only has the documents you need. Imagine, your junk drawer doesn't have any 'junk' in it!

Stop beating yourself up every time you dig through a file drawer, a desk drawer, the top of your desk, and your closet. Make an appointment in your calendar to organize that area and don't let the 'someday trap' mess it up!

My guideline for quality living is: Only have in your life what you know to be useful, think to be beautiful and you love. There is no room for 'someday'!

Creating Abundance

Creating Abundance

Here is a thought provoking article from my colleague Monica Ricci who is a nationally known professional organizer. I agree that we need to set more limits to reach the abundance we want and need from our lives. Read it here:

http://www.cluttercontrolfreak.com/2007/11/02/how-setting-limits-creates-abundance/

We all have too much stuff and too many commitments for our limited amount of time and energy. Consider scaling back to achieve more....

Best wishes for a Simply great week,
Becca

April 18 - What's News?

Actually, I'm the news! I was on the THV-11 Morning Show today giving "3 Tips to Organize Everything", talking with hostess Allison about ways to de-clutter and simplify life. The video will be linked to my website soon at www.creativeconvenience.biz . Special thanks to Rebecca Buerkle, morning producer, for inviting me.

Watch this space for more information about my trip a few days ago to Reno for the annual NAPO conference. The National Association of Professional Organizers is the Organizing Authority, and the only certification association in North America. We have over 4000 members and 800 attended the conference where Peter Walsh was the keynote speaker. I'm one of 11 NAPO members in Arkansas, and their website is www.napo.net .
